How to Increase the Life of a Hearing Aid?

Hearing aids are getting more and more advanced by the year. Now they have tons of processing power and they also have a lot of new features too. Currently, you can easily get three to 10 days out of a battery, which is fantastic to say the least. If you feel as though your batteries are dying on you faster than they should be then there are a few things that you can do to try and increase the life of your hearing aids.

Let the battery breathe

After you have removed the tab from your hearing aid, you then need to let your battery breathe for three to five minutes. This activation time gives air the chance to reach the materials and connections inside the hearing aid.

Wash your hands

Another thing that you can do is wash your hands properly before you even think about changing your batteries. If you get grease or dirt on the batteries then this can damage your hearing aid, which is the last thing that you need. Grease, dirt and dust can also clog up the pores in the battery, which will lower the life overall.

Opening the battery door

When you are not wearing your hearing aid, it’s a good idea for you to turn it off and then open the battery door. This will minimize the amount of battery drain you have. It’s helpful for you to leave the battery compartment of your hearing aid open so moisture can escape as well. If you do this then you will soon find that you can stop the battery from corroding and that you can also stop your hearing aid from being damaged in the future.

Hearing aid dehumidifier

A dehumidifier can also help you to absorb any moisture from the hearing aid and it will also help the battery to be used much more efficiently. The dehumidifier is a fantastic place for you to store your hearing aid when it is not in use, so remember that.

Remove the batteries

If you are not going to be using the device for a longer period, then it is a good idea for you to remove the batteries if possible. This will help you to avoid corrosion and it will also help you to prevent any trapped moisture from causing any damage.

Expiration date

It’s also very important that you check the expiration date on your batteries. The fresher they are, the less they will drain. Ideally, you must try and buy hearing aids that have an expiration date that is around a year after the date of purchase. If you do this then you will take things to that next level with ease.

Use the oldest pack of batteries you have

If you have a selection of batteries, then try and use your oldest ones up first. The newer packs will have the furthest expiration date, so if you use your older ones up first then you will help yourself to get the most life out of them.

Stickers on the battery

The sticker tab on your battery will keep the battery nice and fresh. As soon as you remove the sticker, the battery is then activated and it will begin to drain. You’ll ideally want to make sure that you do not peel the sticker before you actually intend on using that battery if possible. If you do, then you will soon find that you are able to maximize the life overall. It is also helpful for you to keep the batteries in a cool and dry place.

Invest in a rechargeable battery

Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are now coming onto the market more and more. They give you the chance to charge your battery every day so you can get full use. You will still need to replace them on a year-by-year basis but at the end of the day, you won’t have to worry about having no batteries at all.
